Diamonds Are Forever

I’m not a conspiracy theorist or anything, but I think we are being fed a load of phoeey when it comes to the cost of diamonds.

“Diamonds are so expensive because they’re rare. It takes many many many years to make a diamond.”

Go into any mall in the country and you can find (at the very least) 1 jewelry store. Some malls even have 3 or 4. Not that malls are the only places that have jewelry stores, mind you. Jewelry stores are all over.

How many jewelry stores do you think are in the United States? Whatever number you come up with the answer is A LOT. There are plenty of jewelry stores all across this country. And each and every one of those jewelry stores has diamonds. Plenty of diamonds. Plenty of them.

Diamonds aren’t so rare. I could pick one up anytime I wanted to…provided I have the money. I would have a very good choice of diamonds IN EACH STORE. And I never have to worry about a shortage. There will always be jewelry stores, displaying their wares, having their diamonds under million watt halogen bulbs in order to dazzle you with their sparkly brilliance. I know I could go today….tomorrow….next month….or in a year and I’ll be able to pick up a diamond whenever I want.

I think the demand falls well short of the supply. It’s ridiculous how much those things cost.

You know, I hadn't thought of it that way. That's a fascinating observation.

Though I have to tell you Todd had clients who were in NYC in the jewelry district. They would throw a handful of diamonds into their pocket and walk from shop to shop for trading. (I always imagined briefcases handcuffed to wrists for that sort of thing. Nope.) He got my diamond for my engagement ring from there, they were MAILING stones to him so he could look at them. Just wrap them in tissue, toss a stamp on the envelope and mail it to him.

He was having them sent to his office, but for some reason one got sent to our apartment. I wasn't opening his mail yet, and I tossed an envelope at him one night. "Here, this came from some place in New York... that's weird, it feels like there's a lump in there. What is that?" Yep, that would be the diamond I am wearing on my engagement ring right now.

So true, they are expensive!
but so lovely!

Too true. And way rarer than diamonds are the girls who don't want diamonds (uh, that would be me).

Seriously though, ever try to find a white sapphire. Same look of diamonds, much harder to find, helluva lot cheaper. A 1 carat princess cut white sapphire will run about $200. Yep. Two. Hundred.

Now will someone please tell Paul what kind of bargain he's getting here? Please? LMAO!

The diamond business is a cartel. One of the largest in the world as I recall. It created the illusion of value and then controlled very carefully the supply. You can read more here or simply do a search for "diamond cartel" and read a plethora of stuff.

I agree with Sue; there are plenty of much better gemstones out there and they tend to be less expensive. Go for one of them!

diamonds are evil.

this is very true. You can find a diamond just as easily as an emerald or a sapphire yet they are so much more expensive. It's horseshit.

Then entire legend of the diamond is a bunch of bullshit fabricated by that fat white dutchman Cecil Rhodes (Rhodesia aka Zimbabwe, anyone?) to make many many bucks. And if you read anything on child soldiers and Chuck Taylor and the wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia, I don't see how anyone can buy into it. Here is something most folks don;t know about

Never again will I feed the DeBeers machine.
